There's a shift happening in how we think about digital products. For years, we designed screens—buttons, menus, flows. We carefully placed things so people could find them. We reduced clicks. We made the path from "I want to do this" to "done" as short as possible.
But then AI showed up. Now, instead of clicking through five screens, you can just type, "Handle this for me." The interface almost disappears. And that's exactly the problem.
When the interface gets thinner, something else gets thicker: the experience. Because now the system isn't just waiting for your click. It's making decisions. It's taking actions. It's doing things on your behalf—sometimes without you fully realizing what it's up to.
I've been thinking about this a lot lately, especially after reading a piece by a designer who calls herself "Cindy's Design Notes." She argues that AI isn't killing design. It's moving it. From pages to behavior. From usability to something she calls "delegability"—whether you'd actually trust this thing to do the job for you.
When the interface fades
Old software had a basic rule: you had to understand the system before you could use it. You needed to know where the button was, what it was called, what came next. So designers spent their energy on making that learning curve smoother—fewer layers, clearer labels, consistent layouts.
AI flips this. Now the system tries to understand you first. You say what you want, and it figures out the rest. You don't need to know the tool's name. You don't need to know the menu structure. That's liberating, but it comes with a hidden cost.
What if the AI misunderstands you? What if it interprets your vague request in a way that's close but not quite right? The design problem shifts from "how do I make this easy to operate" to "how do I make sure the AI gets what I actually mean." That's a different kind of design work—not about flow, but about intent.
It's like the difference between designing a road and designing a chauffeur. The road just needs clear signs. The chauffeur needs to know when to ask for directions, when to just drive, and when to pull over and let you take the wheel.
Hidden rules, not hidden pages
Here's the tricky part: when there are fewer pages, you might think there's less to design. But really, the design work just moved into invisible territory. It's now about the rules the AI follows—when it acts, when it asks, when it stops.
Take a simple request: "Handle these files for me." Does the AI just give suggestions? Or does it go ahead and delete things? Does it send emails? Does it run a whole workflow? A static page never shows you these decisions. You only feel them when something goes wrong—or when it goes right and you wonder what just happened.
This is what Cindy means by "experience getting thicker." The visible surface is shrinking, but the invisible rules are multiplying. And those rules are what make or break the experience.
From usable to trustworthy
We used to talk about usability. Is it easy to find? Is it smooth to use? Can the user finish the task without getting stuck? Those questions still matter, but there's a bigger one now: Do I dare let this thing act on my behalf?
That's the new test. An AI can be brilliant—fast, accurate, efficient—and still fail because people don't trust it. They worry: Does it really get what I meant? Will it make decisions I didn't approve? Can I see what it did? Is there a way to undo it if it messes up?
So the goal isn't just "make it usable." It's "make it delegable." Make it so people are willing to hand over a task and let it run. Smartness decides how far the AI could go. Design decides how far people will actually let it go.
Sometimes, asking is better than doing
In classic UX, fewer steps is always better. One less click, one less confirmation—that's a win. But with AI, that logic breaks. If you tell the AI "delete these files," and it just does it instantly, that's technically efficient. But it's also terrifying. What if you didn't mean all of them? What if you can't get them back?
So good AI design isn't about minimizing steps. It's about finding the right balance between speed and certainty. Sometimes the best move is to pause and ask one extra question. Not because the AI is dumb, but because the cost of being wrong is too high.
That's what I call boundary design—deciding not just what the AI can do, but what it should do, and where it must stop and hand control back to a human.
Directing behavior, not just screens
If interface design was like building a stage—arranging the set, lighting, and props—then AI experience design is more like being a director. You're shaping how the AI behaves in each moment. When does it speak up? When should it stay quiet? When does it suggest something versus just doing it? When does it admit it's unsure?
This is what's being called AI behavior design. It's not about how the AI looks. It's about how it performs. In a conversation, in a task, in a crisis. The design work is in the timing, the tone, the judgment.
Setting expectations before the action
With traditional software, you knew what would happen when you clicked "download" or "submit." Predictable. With AI, you can't always tell—is it just suggesting, or is it about to act? Will it do one step or ten? Will it touch other data? Will it change something irreversible?
That's why expectation design is becoming crucial. Good AI doesn't need to explain itself constantly, but it should give you a heads-up before it does something significant. And after it acts, you should be able to see what it did. Building that mental model for users—so they're not caught off guard—is a core part of the new design job.
The power of a way back
People hold back from letting AI do real work because they're scared there's no undo button. They think, "If it messes up, I'm stuck." So reversibility becomes a key feature. Can you regenerate a wrong output? Can you restore an edited file? Can you pause an automated sequence? Can you see a log of what it did? Can you take back control at any moment?
These aren't flashy AI tricks. They're the quiet foundations of trust. A trustworthy AI doesn't just do things well—it lets you change your mind.
From UI guidelines to experience governance
Companies used to have design systems—color palettes, component libraries, interaction patterns. That's still important. But now there's a new kind of consistency to worry about. Do all your AI skills use the same confirmation flow? Do they have clear permission boundaries? Are sensitive actions flagged consistently? Is there always a human fallback when something fails? Can users verify, trace, and undo what the AI did?
These aren't UI questions. They're governance questions. You're not just unifying how things look. You're unifying how the AI behaves with people. That's a bigger job, and it's one that design teams are going to have to take on.
Design isn't disappearing—it's moving
Sure, some design work will disappear. Standard pages, repetitive layouts, basic prototypes—AI can handle a lot of that. But that's not the whole story. The real question isn't "how many design jobs will survive?" It's "where is the new experience work showing up?"
It's showing up in intent, in behavior, in boundaries, in trust. It's showing up in making powerful AI feel understandable, controllable, and worth handing your work to.
The old job was designing how people operate software. The new job is designing how software understands people—and how the two of them can get things done together.
In the end, the most valuable thing we can design isn't a button or a page. It's the whole relationship between a person and an intelligent system. The trust, the expectations, the ability to say "that's enough" and have it stop.
That's the new challenge. And honestly, it's a pretty good one to have.
